Musical band Petrea performing live

The music scene in Cornwall is constantly changing, and this is largely due to Falmouth’s University’s music degree.
This has sparked a surge in new music and original bands, bringing life to Falmouth’s venues.

Harry Blackburn

I spoke to the rhythmic guitarist of the rock band ‘Petrea’, Harry Blackburn, who shared interesting insights into starting a band in Cornwall and advice he would give to bands that are just starting up.

The large number of venues in Falmouth allows for an abundance of opportunities for new bands to showcase their talent.
Harry said, “Getting gigs in Falmouth is straightforward if you make connections with the venue hosts. Once they know you, you’re guaranteed to get gigs.”

He continued to state the importance of networking. His advice for new bands is to engage with various people in the music community by attending other bands’ gigs, meeting other musicians of different genres and getting to know the venues themselves to increase the chances of getting a gig.

“The more connections you make, the easier it is to get your foot in the door,” he added.

Falmouth has set the stage for a new generation of musicians eager to progress their music by continuing to support the local music scene.

The town is an accommodating place for new bands to grow and thrive, with most music venues allocating a day of the week for student bands to play.
