The Great British Surf Life Saving team is preparing to take on the world at the International Surf Rescue Challenge in New Zealand, and two thirds of the team are from right here in Cornwall.
Surf Life Saving GB, the national charity helping to keep Britain’s beaches safe, assisted 3525 people last year, including 13 lives saved and 98 rescues.
With over 10,000 members and volunteers across the country, they’re building a strong network of lifesavers through local clubs and competitions.
The International Surf Rescue Challenge kicks off in New Zealand on November 26th and will test the athletes in events like swim, board and ski, all replicating those of a lifeguard.
Ashley Mann, a trustee, active member, coach and GB high performance team manager said: “The team is made up of 6 males and 6 female competitors from all around the country, but 8 of those are based down here in Cornish clubs, predominantly from Gyllyngvase, down on the South Coast and Portreath, a long standing club up on the North Coast.”
There’s also some family connections in this year’s selected athletes.
Ashley shared: “We got to mention brothers Piran and Hayden Philips, they’ll be under the management of dad Rob Philips, who’s the team manager and ex-GB athlete himself. So quite a unique special moment to have – one so many Cornish individuals but to have a family… that doesn’t happen too often.”
Competitor Piran Phillips said: “To have my dad as the coach this year is pretty special. He’s always been my coach but he still remains dad around the dinner table – we’ve got a pretty awesome relationship. Having my brother this year makes it even more special, to do it as a family, it’s what we’ve always dreamt of.”
His brother, Hayden Phillips, added: “It feels great to be selected to represent GB at the International Surf Rescue Challenge. It’s my first time representing GB in the sport and to be able to race alongside my brother in New Zealand, it’s real special. The team this year, I think it’s gonna be real strong. We’ve got some very experienced athletes so we’re gonna build some great team spirit.”
As the countdown to New Zealand begins, Cornwall’s athletes will be hoping to make waves on the world stage.
