With December just around the corner people are once again feeling the rise in Christmas spirit overtaking the streets nowhere is this quite as evident as the annual Christmas Lights-On Ceremonies. Details and times for these events across Cornwall can be found below.

The Penryn lights on Ceremony will take place in Penryn Town Centre where the roads will be closed between 18:00 and 20:00 for the crowd to gather. Be sure to dress warmly as it is predicted to be a chilly 9 degrees and with light rain.

The event will start at 18:00 with the Carharrack and St Day Band performing at the Chapel Steps. After that at 18:20 a festive parade will march from the memorial gardens up the main street led by some recognisable festive characters. At 18:30 the main event will happen starting with a speech from the Mayor of Penryn leading to the magical moment of the lights being turned on. This will then be followed at 19:00 by a celebration at the Temperance hall where liquid refreshments can be found.

Also happening around this time is a Santa’s grotto event including cakes, gifts and even a snow machine at Sashas Would’ve Loved It Charity Shop on West Street further up the road as if heading to Penryn Campus from the Lights-On Ceremony.

This event has a lot of meaning to the people of Penryn, locals describe it as “a time all of Penryn can get together” and a time to “get together with the family” it is a nice moment of respite during a cold and depressing time. Now the lights are on they will stay on bringing bright cheer to the people of Penryn for the rest of the month the lights crisscrossing above the main road and most of the storefronts are now adorned with a Christmas tree. If you are going to the event tomorrow evening or plan to see the lights in the next few weeks it has been recommended to me by a local to find a spot nearby to the Spar bus stop for the best view of the lights. To all who are reading, Merry Christmas.
